From the Board of Directors

Dear Friends,

Since the launch of the Hellman Foundation in late 2011, my siblings and I have devoted our time and effort to learning from the history of Hellman philanthropy and to developing our own strategies for giving. As our parents did before us, we seek to partner with changemakers, to support great ideas and organizations, and to do our part to make a difference.

Our approach to giving is rooted in the belief that philanthropy has an important role to play in solving problems and improving the wellbeing of our communities. We also believe that foundations have a responsibility to do their homework, assuming this role with integrity and intelligence.

At the Hellman Foundation, we take this responsibility seriously. We have tremendous appreciation for those who have committed themselves to addressing the needs of the San Francisco Bay Area. Non-profit and civic leaders, public servants, and educators provide the backbone of our communities. Their contributions of time, passion, and persistence make our communities more vibrant and supportive places to live.
Yet, even here in the Bay Area, a global epicenter of opportunity and innovation, there are critical unmet needs and enduring challenges. Persistent health disparities, lack of educational opportunities, and limited access to resources are still a reality for too many people. We are fortunate to have an opportunity to be part of the efforts to address these challenges.

A portion of the Hellman Foundation portfolio includes organizations with a long history of Hellman support. We are also identifying new grantees whose work aligns with our emerging priorities, which include education and youth development, health access, and basic needs. While much of our giving will reflect shared interests, we each have our own perspectives, priorities and, passions. Foundation giving will also therefore continue to reflect our diverse interests in the projects we support.

Our staff at Hirsch & Associates plays a key role in our philanthropy. They manage all grantmaking activities, represent the Foundation in the community, build relationships with organizations and leaders, and partner with us in establishing strategies and making thoughtful choices about giving. Please contact them with any questions about the Foundation.

We look forward to our work together.

Respectfully,

Board of Directors
